For the best piece that I annotated, I would say that it was Katie McGuires paper. In annotating this paper, I had lots of annotations regarding MLA format, grammar and the efficient use of “They say, I say.” When I am annotating, the first thing I look for is the use of MLA format throughout the essay and I realized that she had not put her work in double space, put MLA headings, and she had not put pagination on her essay yet. I realize that this Is a very niche critique to have on someone’s work but, the use of MLA formatting is very important for writing. Without headings or even a title, it is very difficult for your reader to grasp your work, as the paper does not look complete, and it is very difficult to follow otherwise. I believe that the use of MLA formatting in essays is the most important part of an essay. This does not let me help my peers extend their ideas but this attention to detail can help save points off. Grammar was another thing I noticed a lot when annotating this work. In one example, a sentence used “Personally” and “I” right next to each. I found this to very strange as the use of “Personally” would not be needed here since you are using “I” to indicate that this is a thought you have. Quotations are another big grammar thing that I looked for when annotating. One place where I saw that quotations were not used properly was when she quoted another students work and did not say who they were quoting. This small detail can help gain extra points and will help the readers be able to understand the points being made throughout the essay. The use of “They say, I say” in a work is very important and the balance of both “They say” and “I say” is very important. When explaining a quote, she had used way too much I say when explaining the quote. I saw this and realized that not much of the I say was explaining the quote and I suggested to shorten the “I say” portion of the explanation and to add some explanation to the quote first. The use of effective “They say, I say” in an essay is very important and can help keep the flow of your essay in your favor and not let your readers get bored through your work.
